Hermann Nitsch was born in Wien in 1938. He was one of the most important artists of the Actionist movement in Wien. While studying graphic illustration, he became interested in religious art. He made copies from Rembrandt's “100 Gulden Blatt” and “Christ Crucified”, and from other religious themes by artists such as Tintoretto and El Greco. Georges Mathieu was born at Boulogne-sur-Mer (Pas-de-Calais) in 1921. Mathieu studied literature and philosophy at Lille University before switching to art at the age of twenty-one. He taught English at Douai High School and French at the American University of Biarritz. After an interest in realistic landscapes and portraits, Mathieu developed a distinctive Abstract Expressionist style, which grew out of an emotionally driven, improvised and intuitive act of painting. Graduated in Geology at Bologna University, he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice studying under three protagonists of italian art of the second part of the twentieth century: Emilio Vedova, Giuseppe Santomaso e Virgilio Guidi.
